Day 6 - October 2, 2024 Hurricane Helene - Cattail Creek

What another gorgeous day up here on Cattail Creek.

This was our day to battan down the hatches to our place, throw out all 3 refrigerators and freezers full of food to the bears, and then start walking out.  Our plan was to walk down to the Brett's home on Penny Park Ln (just off of Tennis Court Rd), stay overnight there, turn off their generator, clean out there refrigerator of food, and then hike out to the Baden's home on Cattail Creek Rd where we would be driven out of the area.

It was very sad to have to throw out all of our food. We took it over to the property next to ours and piled it up high. The bears would be hibernating with food in their stomachs this winter. Once we packed a change of clothes, a pair of shoes, dog food, and a bed for Willow, we headed down to Tennis Court Road. We thanked God that we had not had any rain since the storm. This made it a little easier to come to terms with the devastation we were facing.

First, we dropped off our gear at the Bretts' house, and then we decided to walk up to see the Meyers on Deep Gap Road. It still is surprising to me how some homes were totally untouched, while others were not.

When we reached the intersection of Deep Gap and Tennis Court Road, we met up with Amy and Tom Buchanan. They told us that everyone on Deep Gap Road had been evacuated on October 1. We arranged with Amy to meet them at the Badens at 11 a.m. on October 3. She would coordinate with the authorities to have us driven out to the Pensacola Fire Station. So, we headed back to the Bretts house. We spent a pleasant evening relaxing, enjoying a nice dinner, lighting the fireplace, and then off to bed we went, excited for the next day.
