Seasonal Landscapes with Rock Base

Every season is magical for me.  I express my love for the ever-changing forest around me by creating these simple but beautiful seasonal panels.  Since this is handmade glass, each seasonal panel is unique.

I use several different techniques to achieve a realistic representation of the mountain forest.  All of the components that go into making these pieces are glass.  There is no paint or enamels used in my process.

Starting with a clear sheet glass for the base glass, the layers of background mountains are specific color combinations of glass powder that are sifted onto the base glass using hand-cut stencils, and then pre-fired in my kiln.  The tree trunk components are thin glass powder wafers made by sifting combinations of glass powder into a stencil, compressing the powders, and firing in the kiln. The tree branches are pulled in a propane torch from colored rods which I make in my studio.   I mix specific color blends of crushed glass for each seasonal leaf color, ground, shrubs and flowers.  Once all of the "components" for the landscape are pre-made, I start assembling the seasonal specific piece.  The final step is to fire to assembled design in my glass kiln.  We make the rock bases from cement and once cured, cut a channel so the glass landscape can be displayed.
